BiblioCommons Features Local Library Staff Recommendations and Reviews
Toronto, ON—BiblioCommons Inc. announces expanded functionality to feature local library staff recommendations and reviews for all ages throughout the BiblioCore catalog. The new features help library staff to distribute attention to titles patrons are likely to find interesting and enjoyable, but would otherwise be unlikely to discover on their own.
The new functionality:
- Promotes reviews and lists by local library staff on the title record pages before other user contributed content.
- Displays list annotations contributed by local library staff prominently on the related title record pages.
- Supports promoting staff contributions via social media, by assigning every review, video or other contribution a unique URL.
- Provides library staff the ability to feature their blog posts from any third party blogging software on relevant title record pages and alongside related search results.
Staff and patron contributed content has long served as a foundation of the BiblioCommons catalog service. Contributed reviews, lists, tags, ratings, and other content are indexed for search, and shared across all libraries using the BiblioCore catalog, which provides a complete suite of patron-facing functionality on top of a library’s existing integrated library system (ILS). The newly announced staff content options now specifically promote local librarians’ contributions in their catalogs and promotes local librarian expertise to communities they serve.
As concerns mount around the ability of publishers and authors to disseminate attention to titles beyond the current bestsellers, BiblioCommons is helping libraries to become destinations in their communities for recommendations on what to read, watch or listen to next.
“Distributing attention to titles that patrons might not otherwise be aware of becomes more vital as more of the bookselling power is concentrated in fewer and fewer retail channels,” said Beth Jefferson, BiblioCommons Co-Founder. “By featuring local librarians in the catalog and promoting their expertise to their communities, we’re hoping to help distribute attention to local authors and other titles we know community members will appreciate but might not otherwise find on their own.”
Just as significantly, as collection budgets have experienced deep cuts in recent years, libraries have an interest in encouraging demand for mid-list and back-list titles that are available without a holds queue rather than chasing holds ratios on the current week’s bestsellers.
The new staff content functionality was added to the basic BiblioCore catalog service without additional cost to subscribing libraries and is now in production. The BiblioCore catalog connects the communities of Chicago Public Library, Edmonton Public, New York Public, Seattle Public, King County Library System, Brooklyn Public, Ottawa Public, Vancouver Public, Multnomah County, and over 200 other public libraries in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
